ORA Advocacy News
Last Blast of Summer
ORA Executive Director 1 of 3 HSPs Appointed to FRSA SAC
I’m excited to let you know that I’ve been appointed to FSRA’s Stakeholder Advisory Committee (SAC) for Auto Insurance. That’s the good news. The badder news is that of the twelve members only three of us are Health Service Provider reps, the others are insurers and insurer associations. I look forward to working with all of them, but especially Sarah Hutchison from the Ontario Physiotherapy Association and long-time advocacy colleague, ORA member and Psychologists’ voice Faith Kaplan. You can find a full list of members and more about the SAC here.
Optional Benefits & Auto Insurance as First Payor
On September 9 the ORA will be making a submission to the Ministry of Finance as part of its consultation on these proposed legislative changes.
This is another good/'badder' news item for HSPs.
We mostly love the proposal to get Extended Health Benefits out of the way of MVA med-rehab treatment. The requirement to first exhaust these as long exhausted rehab providers and their clients. We’re less enthusiastic about the proposal to make Income Replacement, Non-Earner and Caregiver Benefits buy-up options, thereby removing them from the mandatory basic accident benefits scheme.
We will be sharing the submission with ORA members and sector colleagues once submitted.
FSRA Announces Fraud Reporting Initiative
Aiming to start by December 2025 FSRA will be requiring insurers to submit their fraud data in order to develop a much-needed (and long -requested by us) baseline data on fraud. Reporting will be quarterly so it is expected that useful data will not be available until 2026. The good news is that this responsibility is put onto insurers, the potential bad news for service providers and consumers is that when insurers report volume of suspected fraud one of the actions that they can report on to show they’ve taken action is having denied a claim. At this stage it isn’t clear if insurers might be tempted to explain away high denial rates by citing suspected fraud.
The ORA will be submitting our comments by way of a submission to the consultation in October. Stay tuned for more news as we learn more.
